One development group recently dedicated an entire week to implementing a simple CSV export function. With two developers and straightforward specifications, this should have required barely a day's effort. The remaining time was consumed by deciphering current implementation sufficiently to implement modifications securely. This exemplifies what I term system friction: when your foundation code prolongs tasks beyond reasonable expectations. This phenomenon remains invisible in performance dashboards or sprint analyses.
